Will I Wake Up?

about

This song was written during a 2-hour Facebook live session. Hoang started from scratch, with no ideas, no chords, no lyrics or melody -- just his voice and a guitar. What came out of that session was a rough, unpolished, stream-of-consciousness version of what you hear in the finished product, but the message was the same: How do we continue to present our "best selves" to those who need and demand it when we're experiencing fear, stress and suffering in countless ways?

For Hoang, the answer was complicated. As a father of two young children (one and three years old), giving up wasn't an option. And while there's value in allowing ourselves to be vulnerable with our families, we can't burden our children with issues that are too big for them to shoulder. How much perfection must we perform for each other?

lyrics

going home tomorrow
i could hold your will to mine
you always understand it
but you can’t hide yourself too long

will i wake up falling
in your eyes
i’ll take the weight
my hands are tired
of holding all the stars in line
i’ll take the wait
till I can’t stand

will my hands surround you
i could hold your heart to mine
smile into the darkness
until it starts to open wide

will i wake up crying
in your arms
please take the weight
my body’s tired
of screaming everything is fine
i’ll take the wait
i understand
